‘Stansted in 30’ campaign gets Eagle’s backing

Shadow transport secretary, Maria Eagle MP, is supporting the ‘Stansted in 30’ campaign, and has urged the Government to consider work to cut journey times between Stansted and London from 45 minutes to 30.

Improvements on the West Anglia Main Line in the next round of funding could also deliver improved reliability on the Stansted Express Rail service.

Eagle said: “Our airports are vital for our economic competitiveness, but to be attractive to passengers and business they need good transport links. For too long we have failed to adequately join up the different elements of our transport policy, not least aviation and rail.

“Yet, just as many passengers experience every day, my visit to Stansted began with a 45 minute journey to cover just 35 miles from centralLondon. We have got to see if it is possible to do better than that in the twenty-first century, not least if we are serious about encouraging people to see the benefits of switching from road to rail.

“I hope that as ministers begin the process of determining the priorities for investment in Britain’s rail network for the years ahead, balancing all of the competing priorities, they will at the very least commit to looking seriously at the proposals being made by the ‘Stansted in 30’ campaign.”
