ACoRP welcomes popularity of community rail
It’s not just the main network that is seeing huge increases in passenger demand – Britain’s rural railway is also increasing in popularity.
The number of journeys taken on community rail lines rose by 4.1 million over the last five years, with some lines seeing numbers more than double.
The Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP) is promoting smaller community lines, helping rural regeneration. Members of ACoRP are at major stations today, encouraging city passengers to try local and rural lines.
ACoRP general manager Neil Buxton said: “These latest figures show that local community railways are alive and well, with many showing solid growth despite the economic downturn.
“The speed, reliability and value of rail travel mean that increasing numbers of people are choosing to take the train to travel to work, get out and about, or to visit Britain’s many attractions at the weekend.
“Community Rail Partnerships play a key role in promoting services and the value of local rail and with this week’s ‘Rail in the City’ event we want to spread the word even further.”
