Another hurdle cleared on Reading project
Balfour Beatty’s Reading Viaduct team has celebrated the passing of its first project milestone – removing a major section of disused steel bridge at Cow Lane, west of the station, to make way for the new viaduct.
The new £40 concrete structure will take the fast main lines over the freight and relief lines, helping to cut delays and ease train movements.
Balfour Beatty said the section of bridge was removed in a through-the-night operation, and that it will now go off for recycling.
Reading’s new station building opened over Easter, and the new train depot west of the station will open this autumn.
The viaduct is scheduled to be open by spring 2015, with the whole Reading railway upgrade complete by summer that year.
