Arup and Network Rail publish innovative report on ‘Tomorrow’s Living Station’
Arup, in partnership with Network Rail, have published their ‘Tomorrow’s Living Station’ report, exploring the exciting part that stations will play in our towns and cities.
The report outlines the importance of evolution with society and stations keeping up with the pace of change to meet the needs of passengers now and in the future.
It explores the potential for stations being the driving force behind sustainable and economic growth and developing into ‘multi-modal’ hubs at the heart of healthy communities.
Network Rail and Arup have joined forces, bringing input from senior decision-makers in the industry from both companies to ensure the document is a thorough blueprint for stations across Britain.
Malcolm Smith, Arup Fellow, leader in Integrated City Planning, said:
“We are delighted to have collaborated with Network Rail to develop ‘Tomorrow’s Living Station’, to explore how stations might develop and to make them a place of inspiration and pride. This report sets out a way of thinking that incorporates the fundamental role of stations and railways in moving people safely but explores broader issues and opportunities for stations.
“Rather than being a one-size-fits-all approach, we hope this document will help everyone involved in shaping the future of our stations to come up with their own specific ideas appropriate to the relevant station context.”
Tomorrow’s living station includes a ‘people focus’ where different personas representing people in the community, share what they might like from their future stations, this includes the support of community projects such as volunteers, positive impact on housing and the economy, social inclusion and affordable travel.

The report highlights the hope for stations of the future to become the centre of movement for people in the community and provide seamless daily journeys, providing strong links to business, commerce and innovation.
