Campaigners demand a dedicated fund for line re-openings

The Campaign for Better Transport is to launch a new campaign urging an expansion of the rail network, re-opening of lines, and adding chords and curves to “rejoin missing links”.

The new campaign, Railways Fit for the Future, wants a dedicated fund to be set up for re-openings, alongside modernisation across the network, especially at stations, better incentives for operators to grow rail use, better integration of rail with other public transport, and “lower, simpler and fairer fares”.

The CBT is also urging the public to give their views to the DfT as part of the fares review consultation, which ends on June 28.

The consultation is at http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2012-09
