Emergency training for Hull Trains
A new training scheme introduced by Hull Trains in November has been a great success.
The programme, designed to help staff develop the skills needed to cope in emergency situations, has been running on Saturdays since November, with the help of volunteers from St. John’s Ambulance.
The training sessions involve the simulation of an evacuation situation aboard a train, with the St. John’s team playing the part of passengers. The experience of the volunteers means that they are able to create realistic portrayals of the reactions of distressed passengers, with make-up being used to re-create injuries that the staff may be faced with.
Iann Dunn, Operations Manager for Hull Trains, explained the reason for the training, “We knew the reality of emergency situations can be a great shock to staff and this is not something that is always conveyed in standard training scenarios.”
Employee feedback was very positive. Jennifer Wilkinson, a Hull Trains employee, said of the experience, “Although we can never really know what it would be like to be in a situation like this I feel that this exercise has prepared me for some potential challenges and I feel confident that I could do my best to help people in difficult circumstances.”
