Five injured in Tube explosion

Five people have been injured in an explosion at a north London Underground station.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that police were called at 19:03 yesterday evening, with reports of an explosion and people running at Southgate station.

The public were advised to avoid the area while the area was evacuated, with the station being closed and nearby buildings also evacuated.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police confirmed that the incident is not thought to be terror related, and is not being treated as suspicious.

Following initial inquiries, it is believed that the explosion was caused by a drill battery short-circuiting.

Three people were treated for minor injuries at the scene, and two were taken to hospital, the London Ambulance Service has confirmed.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan praised the emergency services and Transport for London (TfL) for their “swift and professional response” to the incident.

 Southgate station has now reopened.
