Flooding keeps West Cumbria line closed
The West Cumbria rail line is still closed following a landslide caused by flooding on Wednesday. Services were stopped after an embankment collapsed on the Sellafield to Whitehaven line near St Bees.
A train derailed on the same stretch of track six weeks ago due to floods.
The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts along the coast from Gretna to Silloth, and a bus replacement service is in operation. Northern Rail does not know when the line will reopen.
The EA said high tides were expected later. Spokesman Bill Derbyshire said: “We are expecting defences to hold. We will have our people out and about today making sure the people and businesses of Cumbria are safe.”
