Interactive HS2 maps could help improve route – CPRE
New interactive maps have been published to visualise the impact of HS2 by ITO World and the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
Using open data, the maps show how the project will affect the surrounding environment and people. Construction, engineering and noise data from HS2 Ltd has been included, as well as information on population and the landscape.
Peter Miller, chief executive, ITO World, said: “This level of richness and detail in creating mapping of a large scale construction project has simply never been seen before. We’re delighted to be able to help leading charity CPRE with this cutting-edge analysis of such a major project. With open data becoming the norm, the opportunities to benefit from innovative mapping are going to increase exponentially.”
Ralph Smyth, senior transport campaigner, CPRE, said: “HS2 styles itself as a 21st century project but the maps it made available to the public were frankly stuck in the dark ages. After a year of lobbying HS2 Ltd to open up, we were provided with huge, complex datasets.
“Besides aiding public understanding of how HS2 could be built and operated, the maps will be invaluable in improving detailed designs of the route.”
