Laing O’Rourke seals Barclay Mowlem deal
Laing O’Rourke, the leading privately owned construction company in the UK, has acquired Brisbane-based contractor Barclay Mowlem for a fee around £30m.
Although it does not include Barclay Mowlem’s 13.9% state in Freightlink, the company established specifically to supervise the Alice-Darwin rail project, the agreement will the agreement will enable Laing to utilise Barclay Mowlem’s international rail experience, which has been gleaned on projects such as Taiwan’s high-speed railway.
Having established a direct presence in Australia in late 2004, Laing O’Rourke has forged a strong reputation in the rail industry through a series of high-profile contracts, notably the Channel Tunnel rail link at St Pancras. The company’s expertise extends to a variety of rail sectors, including trackwork, signaling, electrification and light rail construction.
