Manchester Metrolink’s greener future

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) are to renew and upgrade Manchester Metrolink’s electrical infrastructure in a bid to support and maintain TfGM’s green transport strategy for the city.

The Greater Manchester transport body has ambitions of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable region and the Metrolink investment is a big step towards this strategy.

The trams will be adopting a fully integrated, high-capacity system across all of Greater Manchester that’s also completely justifiable for the environment, with help from UK Power Networks Services.

Despite already being one of the most sustainable modes of transport in Greater Manchester, the Metrolink are looking to build on their admirable attributes.

The trams can transport more than 200 passengers at a time, powered by solely renewable and green energy sources. All of this is done without the release of harmful emissions.

The electrical upgrade will ensure that the Metrolink system can keep up with Greater Manchester’s rising population. Currently at 2.8 million people, with no signs of slowing down, the project hopes to continue to meet the economical ambitions of the city’s future.   

Lee Maxwell, head of client delivery (North) of UK Power Networks Services, commented:

“We are delighted to support Transport for Greater Manchester’s vision in shaping a greener and cleaner city and region. Partnering with TfGM means that we will contribute towards their sustainability ambitions while supporting our growth and investment in the north of England.”

The first seven-month project is already underway, which involves inspecting and replacing electrical equipment, the design of digital signals, and evaluations of the current fibre optic communications at electricity substations.

The company and TfGM are hoping to deliver the project with minimum disruption to Metro users.
