Network Rail offers £20m of wheelset work at Holgate depot

Network Rail is considering hiring a partner to set up a facility inside its Holgate depot in York to carry out the overhaul and assembly of its fleet’s wheelsets.

In a tender document sent out last week, Network Rail said it is on the lookout for a partnership worth up to £20m that would have responsibility for the overhaul of its passenger, standard and specialist wagons, tampers, stone blowers, rail grinders and other on-track machines.

As part of the contract, the chosen supplier might be asked to set up a facility at the existing depot in York, in partnership with Network Rail.

The organisation has the requirement to overhaul and assemble its wheelsets for both drive and non-drive applications to suit its fleet of vehicles.

Services needed include disassembling and assembling wheelsets, inspecting and gauging components, carrying out non-destructive testing, painting and packaging components, and using machining services to bore components to support overhauls.

The partnership, worth between £15m and £20m, will run for five years. Up to three partners may be selected.
