PB to project manage Mumbai Metro development
The planned development of an 11.5 km-long Metro rail system in Mumbai is to be project managed by leading international engineering consultancy Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB), in joint venture with Systra (SA France). Reliance Energy Ltd has appointed the PB led JV following the award of a 35-year concession to construct, operate and maintain the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) Metro rail.
The PB led JV will provide project and construction management services, engineering services, including civil, structural, systems, trackwork and power supply design.
The 11km route, to include 12 elevated stations, is the first phase of the Mumbai Metro rail project. The 12 stations will be at Versova, D.N. Nagar, Azad Nagar, Andheri, Western Express Highway, Chakala, Airport, Marol Naka, Saki Naka, Subhash Nagar, Asalpha Road and Ghatkopar.
When complete the VAG route will have a carrying capacity of 600,000 people per day with a commuting time of 21 minutes. The current commuting time between Versova and Ghatkopar is 70 minutes. The double line elevated standard gauge metro rail line will include a depot for stabling and maintenance of the rolling stock, with a single line entry 500m long and 5km of track within the depot.
The entire Mumbai Metro rail system has a planned route of 146.5km long. It will be made up of nine lines, 32.5km of which will be underground, with 114km on elevated rails.
