RAIB opens investigation into Hampshire level crossing fatality

A mobility scooter user was struck and killed by a train at Alice Holt level crossing on 5 October, prompting an investigation from the Rail Accident Investigation Passenger (RAIB).

The man, named in local news reports as 83-year-old Derek Thomas, was using the crossing at around 4.20pm, when he was struck and fatally injured by the Alton to Waterloo train.

The crossing, adjacent to Bentley Station in Hampshire, is on a long distance route called The Shipwrights Way, described as suitable for walkers, cyclists and mobility vehicles.

The RAIB said its investigation would identify the sequence of events which led to the accident and consider any factors which may have influenced Mr Thomas’ actions, as well as whether the design and/or management of the crossing were factors in the accident.

Although there were just three level crossing deaths in 2015-16, a record low, Network Rail is seeking to further reduce the dangers by closing crossings where possible and running a safety awareness campaign.

Owen Johns, a spokesperson for Network Rail, said: “Following the tragic death of Derek Thomas at Bentley Station level crossing, Network Rail will be working closely with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to support its investigation, and our thoughts are with his family.”

I do think that this level crossing does need to close and a new footbridge with ramps or pedestrian underpass to be built that will help reduce fatalities on the railway line. But I do feel sorry for the family that has lost a uncle or a father or son or brother. RIP Derek Thomas.
