Test trains launched on Oxford to London Marylebone link

The new railway link between Oxford and London Marylebone has come a step closer as trains began testing ahead of its opening.

The new service, featuring two Chiltern trains an hour, will begin running on 12 December after the final track was laid between Oxford and Oxford Parkway.

The first train was launched on the test track at 06.58 on 21 November.

Trainee drivers will use the trains as part of a training programme, following theoretical and stimulator training. By launch, 126 drivers will have completed 120 hours of training.

The project was made possible by a £320m joint investment by Network Rail and Chiltern. It will also deliver infrastructure required for East West Rail, which received £100m funding in last week’s Autumn Statement.

Oxford to London Paddington takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes to 2 hours depending the stops including Reading (Semi-Fast Oxford to London Paddington is around 1 hour & 5 minutes). So once the new rail link between Oxford Parkway and Oxford is opened. The journey between Oxford and London Marylebone would take at least 1 hour and 30 minutes via Bicester Village.

It doesn't normally take that long Andrew. OXF PAD fasts take 55-60 min during the week and around 70-75 min at the weekend. I think OXF MYB trains will take 70 min, so users will be no worse off at weekends, and those heading to the West End will be not much worse off during the week, as MYB is two Bakerloo stops closer than PAD. Of course, the standard of comfort, wi fi, sockets etc will be streets ahead of FGW.

I was in Oxford today and noticed that a three-car Chiltern Train was stoating about up and down through Oxford station. I was also surprised to see a GWR service from Banbury use what has been completed of Platform 2. I shall be publishing the pictures on my blog. www.anonw.com

Cool! Hopefully chiltern keep their excellent uncomplicated fare structure unlike GW (50p if you book 20 years in advance or £500 on the day, for the same seat on the same train arriving late and packed)
