Vauxhall Tube station to see £45m upgrade
A £45m upgrade to Vauxhall Tube station has been announced by TfL, as part of a major investment designed to support growth and regeneration in the Battersea Nine Elms area.
The greater investment aims to increase jobs, business and homes by extending the Northern line, transforming the gyratory, and implementing major improvements for walking and cycling, including a protected off-carriageway route.
Work on Vauxhall Tube station is set to begin in 2014 and will be complete in 2015. The upgrade will create extra space through reconfiguring the ticket hall, expanding the ticket gates and installing a lift to make the station step free.
The number of passengers at the station is set to increase by 40% over the next few years, making the refurbishment vital.
David Waboso, capital programmes director, London Underground, said: “Vauxhall is a very busy Tube station, with about 21 million people using it annually, and is set to get busier. This upgrade will make the station step-free, will give passengers more space and will make journeys through the station quicker and more pleasant.
“The works, along with other TfL investment in improving the local transport network, will help support the regeneration of the area.”
