Mural commemorates Kinder Scout mass trespass
Northern Rail has teamed up with High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership, Derbyshire County Council and East Midlands Tourism to create a lasting memorial of the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass at New Mills Central station.
Local artist Claire Parker has designed and created a stunning triptych mural through the different medium of paint, mosaic and sculpture with help from mosiacist Richard Siepp and joiner Rob Hindle.
Made up of three panels, the first depicts the crowd gathering for a photo-call prior to the trespass – an image taken directly from original photographs. The centre panel shows the contrast between the Kinder landscape and the mills where many of the trespassers worked. It also shows the train and viaduct that would bring so many people to the Peak District. The final panel is set in 2008, where a walker looks our over the breathtaking beauty of Kinder enjoying the views, a luxury we now enjoy thanks to the mass trespass. The mural also includes a millstone – complete with peat and grass stains!
