Publication of Peninsula Rail plan delayed until after summer

A 20-year plan for improvements to the South West rail network will not be published until after the summer, it has been revealed.

The Peninsula Rail Task Force announced yesterday that it has agreed with the DfT and Network Rail to postpone the report on improving the network’s resilience, journey times and capacity, originally due in early July.

It said to complete the report, it would need more information on economic data, the journey time improvements study findings and resilience work at Dawlish.

The report on Dawlish is not yet in the public domain, and the taskforce said that it would need access to the Great Western Railway funded GRIP2 study on journey time improvements, which is not yet complete.

“The Task Force only have one opportunity to make the strongest case possible to the government; it is therefore essential that it is fully informed,” it said.

The organisation thanked stakeholders for their feedback as part of a public consultation in May.

Borders Railway 35 miles £350m = £10m per mile Bere Alston to Okehampton 20 miles £875m projected = £43.75m per mile Why such cost disparity, it doesn’t cost that much to rebuild Meldon Viaduct? Evidently with the entire cost of resignalling and remodelling at Exeter and Plymouth added to the job, this won’t go anywhere.

This could backfire if there are some autumn storms.
