Network Rail uses AR to show the next generation of railway footbridges
Network Rail is using augmented reality (AR) for the first time to show the next generation of railway footbridges.
Design data from Network Rail has been contributed to an app that allows passengers to see replacement footbridges at stations through AR.
During the process of delivering footbridges across the network, this app will allow Network Rail to continue engagement with passengers throughout Control Period 6 (April 1 2019 – 31 March 2024) and beyond.
The app, ARki, provides 3D visualisations of planned constructions in their place, helping passengers and local communities see the future of their stations and see the roll out of Network Rail’s new generation of signature footbridges.
The three footbridge designs, bringing quality and distinctive identity to the network in the years ahead are The Beacon, featuring lantern-topped lift towers, The Ribbon, with 30-degree lift and stair rotations and The Frame, winner of the Network Rail and Riba footbridge design competition of 2018.
Anthony Dewar, professional head, buildings and architecture at Network Rail said:
“The app will give our customers a glimpse of their future station, using new technology to give a level of detail we’ve never provided before.”
“As well as keeping local people informed of changes to their station, it provides a fitting, high-tech showcase for our exciting new footbridge designs.”
“We’re very proud of the three new designs and want as many people as possible to be aware of and appreciate them – the app is the perfect way to showcase the footbridges to as large an audience as possible.”
The app supports Network Rail’s ‘Putting passengers first’ motto by giving the public direct access to the architects’ plans of the future of their railways.
