Tram-train link from airport investigated
Transport Scotland and Glasgow Airport owner BAA are investigating the benefits of building a tram-train link to the city centre, it has been revealed.
Scottish transport minister Keith Brown announced that a study group is currently looking at the viability of a link, as well as other measures to reduce congestions and to improve access to the airport.
This comes after Network Rail recently launched a consultation on the use of tram-train technology to deliver savings in capital, operational and maintenance costs of the railway.
Campaign group Tram Forward labelled the move ‘helpful’ and stated: “We hope to hear of a positive outcome from the study group shortly.”
The tram-train idea, which has been growing in popularity inEuropeespecially, involves light rail rolling stock running on both urban tramways and the heavy rail network, to get the best use out of both.
