Candfield retires as RIA director general

Jeremy Candfield is to retire as director general of the Railway Industry Association (RIA) due to health reasons.

Candfield, who has held the position since 1998, has not been well for a while with Parkinson’s disease, and he has reluctantly decided to step down from his role and focus on his family and health.

David Tonkin, former CEO of Atkins UK & Europe and past-RIA Chairman, will take over as interim director general while a permanent replacement is found. Candfield will, however, continue in a part-time role on particular projects until October.

RIA chairman Gordon Wakeford, who is also interim chair of the Rail Supply Group, said: “We owe Jeremy enormous thanks for the considerable service he has provided to RIA and to the rail industry. RIA has gone from strength to strength during his office.”
