Crossrail TBM reaches Stepney Green Cavern
Crossrail’s Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Elizabeth has reached a huge underground cavern below Stepney Green in east London, where it will receive maintenance before carrying on its journey.
Elizabeth, which is creating a tunnel from Limmo Peninsula to Farringdon, is the first of the Crossrail TBMs to reach the cavern. Its entire tunnelling journey will be 5.16 miles in total.
Maintenance will be carried out inside the tunnel before the TBM tunnels towards Whitechapel, Liverpool Station and Farringdon. The caverns are some of the largest mined caverns ever built in Europe and three other TBMs are due to breakthrough into the cavern.
Major tunnelling work is due for completion by the end of 2014.
