Flyover preparation begins at Norton Bridge

Preparatory works have begun for the Stafford Area Improvements Programme, ahead of a decision on the flyover at Norton Bridge.

The £250m programme is designed to remove a major bottleneck on the West Coast Mainline and is subject to a Development Consent Order (DCO). The flyover will separate high speed trains from slower local services and freight to reduce congestion and cut journey times.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin is expected to make a decision in early 2014. Environmental works are currently underway through separate planning permission, including pipeline diversions and a relocation programme for great crested newts.

Dominic Baldwin, manager of the Staffordshire Alliance which is carrying out the work, explained: “These essential preparatory works will take place during normal working hours, Monday to Friday, as well as Saturday mornings. During this time, traffic management will be in place to allow safe access to and from the construction site.”
