Former Carillion Rail boss appointed to lead Amey’s rail business
The former managing director of Carillion Rail has been appointed as the new head of Amey’s rail business.
Andy Joy will take on the role of sector director at Amey’s rail business after previously holding the role of managing director of Carillion Rail and working as its national operations director.
Joy joined the company in 2018 as business director when Amey acquired the majority of Carillion’s rail business.
Amey said Joy played a key role in ensuring the smooth transition of 600 employees and several major contracts, as well as the delivery of key milestones on the Midland Mainline, Crossrail, and the North-West electrification programme.
Nicola Hindle, managing director of Consulting and Rail, welcomed the appointment and paid tribute to his work during the first year at the company.
She said: “Having seen significant growth of our rail business within the last 12 months, I am confident that the breadth and depth of Andy’s senior executive experience will be invaluable to the growth and consolidation of our position in the sector.”
Carillion, one of the industry’s biggest suppliers and one of the government’s most important contractors, went into liquidation in January 2018 after emergency talks collapsed.
The construction giant was Network Rail’s second biggest maintenance service supplier and was involved in HS2 before January last year.
The North West electrification programme between Manchester and Preston via Bolton has been heavily delayed and has been blamed for the widespread disruptions across the north’s network since the timetable shake-up last May.
But in June last year Network Rail said progress was “accelerating” after Amey replaced the bankrupt Carillion.
It was reported in December that parent Spanish company and construction giant Ferrovial was looking to sell its UK subsidiary Amey despite it holding several major government contracts.
