GWR warns 1,000 customer accounts may have been breached

Around 1,000 Great Western Railway (GWR) customer accounts have been compromised and a warning email sent out to customers.

GWR has today sent an email to all its online account holders, warning them to reset their password as a precaution, although it has offered reassurance that it believes that only a small number of accounts had been targeted.

According to the train operator its data has not been hacked and its systems have not been compromised.

A spokesperson for GWR explained: “This kind of attack uses account details harvested from other areas of the web to try and catch out consumers with poor password habits.

“Sadly, it is the kind of attack that is experienced on a daily basis by businesses across the globe and is a reminder of the importance of good password practice.”

The train operator has also confirmed that it has reset accounts as a precaution.
