Hammond dismissed from DfT
Less than two years into the role, Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond has been replaced as transport minister in the Cabinet reshuffle being undertaken by David Cameron.
Hammond, parliamentary under-secretary of state since September 2012, was charged with overseeing the Highways Agency reform plans and the trial of longer lorries, and since last October's reshuffle has been responsible for rail franchising and operations.
But as part of Cameron’s wide-ranging reshuffle Hammond was dismissed last night. Since then, former whip Claire Perry MP has become parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department for Transport – which forms part of a move from the PM to promote younger ministers and women.
John Hayes MP has also become a transport minister in the reshuffle. However, he will also continue as a minister of state at the Cabinet Office.
Precise roles have not yet been clarified.
