HS2 could improve broadband access
The Government is developing plans to run fibre optic cables alongside the HS2 track, improving access to super-fast broadband for rural communities, the rail minister has suggested.
Other utilities such as water and electricity could also be improved by the scheme.
Critics of HS2 have argued that the economic benefits HS2 could bring could be achieved by greater use of video conferences and digital connection, without the huge cost.
Simon Burns said: “HS2 is far more than a new railway line — it is a national infrastructure project that will bring places and people closer together while creating jobs and driving growth.
“Construction of HS2 gives us the perfect opportunity to explore how we can make it easier for even more people to benefit from ultra-fast broadband — and potentially deliver improvements to the provision of other utility services, including water and electricity.”
The DfT is preparing to publish a report into the impact of HS2, which will confirm the route of the second stage of the project, from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds. The first stage is due to open in 2026.
