Turning the tables

An interesting, entertaining and freezing cold morning for RTM in York this morning, learning more about the planned new Rail Operating Centre (which will be the busiest of 14 across the country when Network Rail’s centralisation plans reach completion) and Workforce Development Centre.

Rail minister Simon Burns – the subject of recent embarrassing headlines about being chauffeured into work, which prompted him to switch to the commuter train himself – was there bigging up railway investment. He also enjoyed seeing the new turntable in action after cutting the ribbon, now that it’s replaced the old engineer’s triangle (the land was needed for the new buildings).

He also spoke to RTM about getting unnecessary costs out of the railway, and the prospects for franchise devolution in the wake of the Brown review.
