Network Rail tree felling must undergo consultation – MP
An MP has criticised Network Rail’s tree felling policy and is calling for transport minister Theresa Villiers to ensure proper consultation takes place.
Network Rail fells hundreds of miles of trees along its tracks to uphold safety and avoid delays. The company states this is cheaper than repeated pruning across such a large area. Trees by the tracks can obscure signals and weaken embankments, while leaves on the line can cause delays.
Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn is calling for clearer consultation, as residents can object to tree removal that leaves their gardens exposed.
He told BBC News: “Clearly, moving trees away that are very near to signalling equipment and the line, that is necessary. I understand and accept that.
“But the management of the vegetation alongside a track is part and parcel of railway management and they should just accept that and factor it into their budget.”
MPs are to debate the issue today in Parliament’s Westminster Hall.
