Rail freight chiefs will have a say in passenger consultations
Bosses of freight companies around the U.K will be permitted to offer their opinions during passenger consultations in an effort to promote a positive relationship between freight operators and the public, a government transport chief has said.
Speaking at the Rail Freight Group Conference last month, Department for Transport head of rail strategy projects, Kate Jennings, hailed the rail freight as a “poster child” for private investment and the department is ensuring that the process for taking forward third party investment proposals and engagement is as transparent as possible.
Jennings emphasised the work that the DfT have been doing to ensure that freight stakeholders have a voice in the franchise process.
Jennings added that government will be holding upcoming investment opportunity days.
The DfT’s ‘Rail market-led proposals’ webpage aims to “provide a sustainable future for the rail sector and open up the development and delivery of rail infrastructure”, and targets increasing overall investment in the railway, relieving the burden on taxpayers and farepayers and to create real contestability in the market.
The consultation days take place in London at the Park Plaza Victoria, 239 Vauxhall Bridge Road on Monday 14 May, from 9:00am to 4:30pm, and in Birmingham at the MacDonald Burlington Hotel, 126 New Street on Tuesday June 5, from 9:00am to 4:30pm.
