Nexus escalator replacement success

New escalators have been installed ahead of schedule at Gateshead Metro station, Nexus has announced.

The work took four months with contractors Schindler, and brings the number of escalators replaced under the programme to 17 in the past four years.

Raymond Johnstone, Nexus director of rail and infrastructure, said: “We have completed the replacement of Gateshead’s escalators ahead of schedule.  This has been a complex project lasting most of the summer, so I want to thank passengers for their patience and understanding.

“The four new escalators will last another 30 years and are smoother and more energy efficient than those originally installed back in 1981.

This is just one way Nexus is securing the future of Metro for decades to come, through our £385m ‘Metro: all change’ investment programme.”
