Colas buys 10 Class 60 locos from DB Schenker

Colas Rail has bought 10 class 60 locomotives from DB Schenker Rail UK – expanding its fleet of freights locomotives and infrastructure maintenance machines.

The purchase price, however, has not been disclosed. According to a statement seen by RTM, the locomotives will be overhauled by DB Schenker Rail UK at its Toton Train Maintenance Depot to the enhanced ‘Super 60’ specification.

Stephen Haynes, managing director of Colas Rail Services, said: “This order for 10 ‘Super’ Class 60 locomotives, as well as the acquisition of 10 new Class 70 locomotives announced earlier in the year, which have all been delivered, demonstrates Colas Rail’s commitment to significantly develop and grow our Freight haulage business in the United Kingdom.

“This increase in capacity will allow us to serve an expanding portfolio of customers and contracts delivering the highest levels of service to our customers.”

Colas, part of the Bouygues Group, which has a turnover of €33.3bn, also stated that the first locomotives will go into commercial service this month.

Magic. At last, some serious and positive action towards delivering an improved, fast and efficient freight service throughout the country. Now we need the track and the extra interconnectability which more track & chords brings to be able to deliver more goods at more destinations more easily. This will take lorries off the roads coming into, leaving and around this pocket handkerchief of a country, so reducing noxious pollution, traffic jams, fatalities as well as improving the quality of our every day lives. No small thing when you think about it.

What good news that these mighty locos are coming back into service . I was fortunate in being able to ride these locos when they first came into service at Immingham. Impressive locos that should never have been taken out of service. Shame on EWS/SHENKER

The American buyers of this part of railfreight could not wait to get their hands on North American built equipment and it now transpires that had the British class 60s been further developed they would have better in terms of fuel economy and the ability to haul heavy loads.Why did we not take this into consideration when we sold it we seem to be hell bent on destroying british industrial capacity
