Multi-million pound roling stock order for GB Railfreight

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has placed a multi-million pound order for new locomotives and wagons.

The order is for 5 Class 66 locomotives, 140 ‘Falcon’ box wagons, 10 Autoballasters and 22 FEA flat wagons, with 63 modules to convert the flats into ‘Salmon’ or ‘Tench’ type wagons.

The stock will be leased through HSBC Rail (UK). The FEA and Falcon wagons will be built in Eastern Europe by Greenbrier, while Wabtec will build the Autoballasters.

The wagons will arrive throughout the summer, while the locomotives, being built by EMD in London, Ontario, are due in the UK towards the end of the year.

The locomotives, worth approximately £1.5 million each, will be for general freight use while the wagons will help GBRf deliver its Metronet contract commitments.

GBRf Managing Director, John Smith, said, “We have enjoyed significant commercial success over the past year or so – we’ve broken in to new markets, increased our workload with existing customers and won the biggest contract in our history.

“Our deal with Metronet, to help them more than triple track renewal production on one-third f the Underground network, is hugely important for the company. I am confident our traditional standards of reliability, quality and customers service coupled with our determination to invest in the best equipment will help enable Metronet to deliver its promises to Underground passengers.”
