Yesterday’s transport select committee was pretty typical of the genre – statements of regret and determination to get to the truth, but a notable lack of straight answers to straight questions.
Some of this was for legal and HR reasons, linked to the suspension of three civil servants, and also so as not to pre-judge the ongoing enquiries.
But it’s clear that the DfT need some stability at the top and at middle management levels. A better quality assurance process could have picked up the errors that caused the problems earlier.
