Next phase of Crossrail works begin at Farringdon

Works to redevelop Farringdon station to provide a direct connection to Crossrail services are set to begin tomorrow (31 October) and will last for three years.

The works, which will provide a direct connection to Crossrail services, will include changes to the ticket hall and Thameslink platforms.

They also come just two months after Victoria, the final Crossrail tunnelling machine, “finished her journey” 40 metres below the station.

Tunnelling works for Crossrail began in the summer of 2012 and ended at Farringdon, at which point the 1,000-tonne tunnelling machines had bored 26 miles of new 6.2m diameter rail tunnels under London.

Once complete, the station will become a major rail interchange providing connections to London Underground and Thameslink networks and, with the arrival of Crossrail in 2018, Farringdon is set to become one of the UK’s busiest rail hubs.

Crossrail will serve 40 stations in the capital’s network, connecting Reading and Heathrow in the west with Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

Passengers will be able to travel from outer London to business hubs in the West End, the city and Canary Wharf, as well as to London’s five airports.
