Amey wins HS2 substations power deal

Infrastructure giant Amey, which in 2016-17 was Network Rail’s third biggest supplier, has landed an HS2 construction contract to provide power for a part of the build stage.

The company will design, build and install two new temporary substations to support the delivery of the Chiltern Tunnel south portal. The first will connect to the Scottish and Southern Electricity Network (SSEN) power grid and transform voltage levels from 132kV to 33kV, whilst the second will then drop these voltage levels further to 11kV ready for the distribution of power to the tunnelling equipment required for Chiltern.

Andy Milner, its chief executive, who RTM interviewed last year, said: “The HS2 programme is an exciting piece of work for us and is testament to the skills and expertise of our long serving and dedicated workforce.

“The construction of the new substations will enable us to provide power to support the delivery of the Chiltern Tunnel for HS2.”

Although not directly involved in the HS2 construction yet beyond this deal, Amey, a subsidiary of Ferrovial, is supporting Ferrovial Agroman in the delivery of enabling works for the high-speed project.

Ferrovial was chosen in 2016 to deliver £300m worth of enabling works as part of a joint venture with Morgan Sindall and BAM Nuttall.

Amey also delivers facilities management services to HS2’s office in London.
