Euston and Old Oak Common HS2 builders invited to tender

HS2 Ltd has now confirmed the shortlist of bidders who have been invited to tender for two major new London station construction contracts.

In August last year, the organisation announced that it was on the lookout for builders who could push ahead with construction plans for an expanded station at Euston and a brand-new Old Oak Common transport hub, both set to open in 2026.

It has now unveiled the shortlist of companies who have formally been invited to tender for the two deals. For London Euston, this includes:

  • Costain Ltd/Skanska Construction UK Ltd
  • Mace Limited/Dragados S.A.
  • Bechtel Limited
  • BAM Nuttall Ltd/Ferrovial Agroman (UK) Ltd
  • Canary Wharf Contractors Limited/MTR Corporation (UK) Limited/Laing O’Rourke Construction Limited

For the new hub at Old Oak Common, the shortlist includes:

  • Balfour Beatty Group Ltd/VINCI Construction UK Ltd/VINCI Construction Grands Projets SAS/SYSTRA Ltd
  • Mace Limited/Dragados S.A.
  • Bechtel Limited
  • BAM Nuttall Limited/Ferrovial Agroman (UK) Limited

Working with HS2 Ltd and the Euston and Old Oak Common station designers, who were finally announced last week, the construction partner will act as the “management contractor” responsible for procuring, integrating and managing the supply chains involved.

Contracts are set to the award in the autumn.

The organisation estimates that the contracts will support around 4,000 jobs during construction and 700 during operation.

The new Old Oak Common station will become the largest interchange station in West London where National Rail (Great Western Railway), Elizabeth Line, London Overground and HS2 will meet and connect. Similar to Clapham Junction, Stratford, East Croydon, Finsbury Park and other interchange stations in Greater London. Plus with White City and Shepherd’s Bush London Underground stations and Kensington (Olympia) station nearby where it would also become a out-of-interchange station (within walking distance). Also 2 new railway stations close to Old Oak Common on the London Overground called Hythe Road (West London Line) and Old Oak Common Lane (North London Line) stations. As it would become a out-of-interchange for passengers to walk between these stations. As signposted.

Given the scale of redevelopment Euston Station and The area around it will undergo we need someone with the type of vision former Mayor Ken Livingstone had for its an opportunity to upgrade and create far better rail facilities in what will become a new part of London . For Euston Underground Station will need as big an upgrade as nearby Kings Cross with plans for a direct link to Euston Square, there are other opportunities available ... For Euston Square while the eastern end of the station could be linked to Euston Tube Station , the present station is next to Warren Street Station raising the possibility of combining these two stations together upgrading Warren Street Station including full step free access and thus reducing demand at Euston Station . While the expansion of Euston brings it closer to the North London Line Overground plans were made for a new station at Maiden Lane just north of Kings Cross so perhaps these plans need to be taken forward. While at Old Oak Common a full upgrade to Willesden Junction Station should include reinstated platforms on lines served by West London Line / Midland Main Line either at Willesden Junction or further south where OOC Station will be .

Missing a major opportunity of linking all these lines up with the WCML at Willesden Junction. Wembley. Harrow. Watford and the northern cities of Birmingham Liverpool Manchester and Glasgow would be accessible if this link were to be put in. Also have an interchange at Northwick Park where the Metropolitan and Chiltern lines cross over the Bakerloo. London Overground. London Midland and Southern Rail. Now that would be an idea for the planners to think about
