NR review could further delay Sheffield to Rotherham tram-train

The Sheffield to Rotherham tram-train pilot scheme could be delayed further because of a Network Rail review, transport minister Andrew Jones MP has confirmed.

In response to a question from MP Greg Mulholland, Jones said that Network Rail had initiated a review of the programme of works needed to adapt the infrastructure between Meadowhall South and Rotherham Parkgate for the tram-train.

The concerns are based on issues with the approval of new bespoke electrification equipment for the pilot project, the UK’s first tram-train.

Jones said that the DfT and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, who are co-funding the programme, were “clearly disappointed” by more delays in the project.

“The department understands that Network Rail has encountered significant issues with the approval of new bespoke electrification equipment needed to operate the tram train vehicles,” said Jones. “The joint funders are clearly disappointed by this further delay.”

Tram-train was due to start running in 2015, but this was delayed to spring 2016 and then January 2017 after delays due to problems adapting the heavy rail network.

Simon Coulthard, Network Rail’s head of the project, admitted last year that it was facing delays because of traction problems.

Jones said the project should be delivered by “early spring 2017”, but added that “until the outcome of the Network Rail review is known”, no further details could be provided.

It is a shame that UK, the place where railway was born and the modern industry has begun, can not even finish a few hundred of meters of railway track on time in the 21st century.

Mark - Exactly ! Total incompetence from the beginning on this Tram-Train project. At this rate HS2 will reach Glasgow & Edinburgh before a single tram-train reaches Rotherham. Everyone involved in the project, from the DfT on down, should hang their heads in shame.

In an effort to hide their own limitations, NR have made a complete pig's ear out of this. As I have heard so many times around our city, why the hell didn't they bring in Deutsche Bahn, with a couple of decades tram-train experience, in from the beginning or at least put key staff on plane / train to Karlsruhe? We have our own way of working in the UK. Yeah, and it don't work! Network Fail again!
