Testing begins on TPE’s new CAF trains
The first of TransPennine Express’ (TPE’s) new Nova 3 trains, manufactured by CAF, has commenced testing ahead of delivery at the end of 2018.
A variety of tests, which include aerodynamics, braking and on-board information systems, will be carried out at the Velim test centre in the Czech Republic.
The 13 five-carriage trains each of have 291 seats – 110 more than on the current Class 185 trains operated on the route – and are expected to enter service towards the end of this year.
According to TPE, each train will have comfortable seating, more luggage space, plug and USB charging points, and free on-board wi-fi in both Standard and First Class.
Once testing is complete the trains will travel to the UK, where further tests will be carried out before they begin carrying passengers between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, York, Scarborough and Middlesbrough.
Leo Goodwin, TPE’s managing director, said: “It’s great that our plans are now becoming reality and I can’t wait for our customers to see and experience these futuristic trains for themselves.
“New trains mean more seats and the experience onboard these new carriages will be completely transformed. Customers in this part of the world will soon be travelling on some of the newest trains in the country.”
The trains are being built by CAF and financed by Beacon Rail. They will be pulled by Beacon Rail-owned Class 68 locomotives, leased by Direct Rail Services and maintained at Alstom’s Manchester facility.
