Concerns raised over High Speed One sale
MPs have voiced their concerns over the sale of Britain’s only high speed rail link, which runs between London St Pancreas and the channel tunnel.
Louise Ellman MP, chair of the transport select committee, said: “These are strategic assets and they are very important for the national and international rail network. We should be concerned about the long-term implications of this type of sell-off.”
However, Philip Hammond, the transport secretary, said: “High Speed One is a national success story and a world class railway operating to international standards. The money generated by this sale will make an early significant contribution to the crucial task of reducing the public sector debt.”
At the moment the high speed rail link is operated by a company called London and Continental Railways, which is controlled by the Department for Transport.
