HS2 contractors begin work on Euston station site
Work to construct the HS2 London station at Euston has taken a significant step forward this month (July).
Contractors Mace Dragados joint venture has moved onto the construction site next to to Euston station to commence work on the new high-speed station in central London.
Mace Dragados were appointed as HS2’s Construction Partner for Euston Station in March last year and have been working in collaboration with HS2 to prepare for the early works.
The new station will deliver greater capacity at Euston station, doubling the number of peak time seats available on Britain’s new rail network.
A new concourse is also being built alongside platforms for the low-carbon, high-speed trains and improved connections to Euston and Euston Square Underground stations.
With Mace Dragados now at the Euston site, steps to begin construction can begin. New welfare accommodation has been erected with steps taken to give the site crews space to social distance due to the current Covid-19 outbreak.
Piling work for the basement wall of the station will begin in advance of the large-scale excavations and substructure works next year.
This progress has been welcomes by all parties involved, as it creates and sustains jobs within the industry.
During the peak construction period at Euston, approximately 3,000 people will be working on the construction of the station, part of the 30,000 strong team that will be working across the route.
Laurence Whitbourn, HS2’s Euston Area Client Director, said: “The construction of HS2 is rapidly increasing in pace and the handover of the Euston site to our construction partner Mace Dragados is another important milestone in the programme to build Britain’s new low-carbon, high speed railway.
“The progress in our work comes at a good time as we help support the British economy and construction sector as part of the post-pandemic economic recovery creating new jobs and providing contract opportunities.”
Mace Dragados Project Director, Martyn Woodhouse, said: “This is an incredibly exciting moment for the team, getting on site and shovels in the ground is what it’s all about and it’s great to be getting started.”
