Southern introduces smartcard ticketing in London
The Key – Southern’s smartcard – has been introduced in London.
Commuters with season tickets will be able to use the card instead of paper tickets, with other fares to be rolled out over the next year. The card is an ITSO based system and was developed with the DfT.
Passengers travelling from Southern stations south of Gatwick Airport will be able to use the Key to get to East Croydon, Clapham Junction and London Victoria.
Southern’s managing director, Chris Burchell said: “This is a massive step forward for the rail industry, and would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of the Department, the commitment of our suppliers and the help and expertise of the Go-Ahead Group which has an unrivalled record in smartcard development in the transport sector.
“Together, we are delivering a realistic alternative to paper tickets which paves the way for the planned implementation of smartcards across the south east rail network. We are pleased to be true pioneers in this exciting development for both the rail industry and its passengers.”
Rail minister Baroness Kramer said: “This is just the first step in our ambitious programme to deliver a better deal for commuters in the south-east.
“This programme could not have happened without Government investment but I also want to pay tribute to the hard work of staff in Southern and Transport for London and their suppliers, their can-do attitude and spirit of partnership.”
