Future Railway launches competition to cut station congestion

A new £2m competition has been launched by Future Railway to reduce future ticket barrier congestion.

The number of passenger journeys are set to double over the next 30 years, with some stations already at or near maximum capacity. To avoid increasingly overcrowded stations, the competition calls for alternatives to the existing gate-line, a major source of congestion at stations.

Proposals could include new ticket detection systems, interfaces with existing systems and will ideally cover people, process and technology. Ideas must be relevant to any station size and be compatible with the existing national rail infrastructure.

Safety, security and revenue protection should also be considered and recognise the government’s commitment to ITSO based ticketing solutions whilst coping with existing ticket types and considering the needs of different passenger types.

A competition briefing/partnership forming event will be held on Wednesday 2 April 2014 to allow bidders to gain further information about the competition and seek partners to form a consortium.
