PM announces £1m rail competition to attract tourists
David Cameron has announced today (17 July) a new £1m ‘Rail for Tourism innovation’ competition run jointly by RSSB and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The competition will call for ideas to transform the rail travel experience for tourists across the UK in an effort to make it more attractive.
Winners will receive funding to develop their ideas further and carry out trials.
A spokesperson from RSSB said: "[We are] really pleased to be working with the government on the new plan to drive tourists beyond London. We are in the process of scoping the competition and will be announcing further details and a launch date in due course."
It will be part of RSSB’s FutureRailway programme, recently responsible for the Train Operator Competition that granted three industry giants with £6m funds to develop innovative railway projects.
The competition is part of a broader government scheme to boost nationwide tourism and drive visitors beyond London, building upon the success of the 2011 strategy.
