New tram-train collides with lorry in Sheffield on the day of launch

One of the UK’s first ever ‘tram-trains’ has derailed on the day of its launch after colliding with a lorry in Sheffield.

Police are currently investigating the collision, who said in a statement that at this time no-one is thought to be seriously injured and Stagecoach have said all trams in the area are being terminated after the major incident.

Just this morning, Dan Jarvis and Jo Johnson launched the tram-train, which will travel between Sheffield and Rotherham utilising both existing tramlines and railway lines.

The long-awaited pilot project will now run for two years after several delays to the scheme, with the launch pushed back from 2015 to spring 2016, then to January 2017, before the final date of summer 2018 was set.

The scheme was criticised as a ‘how not to’ seminar by MPs after costs spiralled out of control, rising from £15m to £75m.
