DB Schenker Rail to change name to DB Cargo UK
Freight company DB Schenker Rail UK, which operates Royal Mail services, will become DB Cargo UK from today.
The company has operated all Royal Mail services since 2010 and it recently won a five-year contract with building materials company Tarmac.
The DB Cargo name will apply to all of the company’s rail businesses in Europe by the end of the year, but they will remain integrated with the company’s logistics businesses.
Geoff Spencer, CEO of DB Cargo UK, said: “We’ll be continuing to build on our growing reputation for delivering a high quality service to our valued customers, not just domestically but across borders too.
“The name change has no impact on existing contracts or commercial arrangements. However, over time, you will see the logo on our documentation, buildings and communications change from ‘DB Schenker’ to the familiar ‘DB’ corporate mark. Other than this, it’s business as usual.”
The Doncaster based company was formed in 1996 under the name English, Welsh and Scottish Railway from privatised British freight companies and initially owned by a consortium led by US regional railroad Wisconsin Central Transportation Corporation (WCTC).
It was bought by Deutsche Bahn AG in 2007 and renamed DB Schenker Rail UK in 2009.
Last year, DB cut 234 jobs due to the decline in demand for coal.
