New timetable sees Victoria line services increase during commuting times
New timetables, released by Transport for London (TfL), will see trains arriving every 100 seconds for around three hours during weekday morning and evening commuting peaks on the Victoria line.
The change sees the length of time the increased services run during peak times doubled, having currently operated at 100 seconds per train for just an hour and half. This increased frequency is expected to help reduce crowding and congestion on one of Europe’s busiest metro services.
An approximate 275,000 customers will benefit from the new timetable every weekday, giving Londoners greater flexibility to travel when it suits them and reduce crowds along the line.
More than 250 millions customers use the Victoria line annually, which serves Oxford Circus, Kings Cross St Pancras and Victoria, among the busiest stations on the TfL network.
Outside of the peak times, trains will continue to arrive every 135 seconds.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The Victoria line is one of London's busiest Tube lines, so I'm delighted that our new timetable will mean hundreds of thousands of commuters will benefit from quicker, more comfortable journeys.
“Since becoming mayor I've frozen TfL fares, introduced the Hopper fare and invested record amounts in new infrastructure - making it even more convenient for Londoners to use public transport.”
Brian Woodhead, director of customer service for London Underground, added: “The new timetable on the Victoria line will contribute towards better journeys for hundreds of thousands of customers who use the line every day.
“It will make stations and trains less crowded, and will make journeys quicker and more comfortable. It is one of the many ways that we are seeking to improve the lives of Londoners, encourage use of public transport and support the city's economic growth”.
The new timetable for the Victoria line follows the introduction of similar increased peak times services on the Northern and Jubilee lines last year.
The Victoria line has benefitted from a range of improvements in recent years, including the upgrading of the Siemens signalling system in 2017, enabling increased service frequency. Victoria Tube station underwent a major upgrade in 2018, delivering two new entrances, nine new escalators and a new ticket hall to passengers, while the Victoria line also operates Night Tube services on a Friday and Saturday to provide a quick and affordable travel option across London at night.
