An interior and exterior refresh

Source: Rail Technology Magazine Feb/March 2015

Welcome to this edition of Rail Technology Magazine, which you will have seen by now has a brand new look, feel and overall design.

Over the past 15 years, RTM has been the independent trade journal for the rail industry, focusing not just on technology but also on people, policy, construction, IT, rail recruitment and much else besides.

We decided it was time to overhaul the way the magazine looks, to signpost readers to our articles more easily and to make our content as attractive and engaging as possible.

Our focus remains the same – project updates, interviews, analysis, news, comment, technical reports, best practice and technology showcases, with contributions from leading industry decision-makers, project managers, engineers, designers, officials, experts and of course our own editorial team.

We also still have our regular sections like News from page 4, our Events listings on page 111 and our Inbox section for your letters, comments and views on page 18 – keep them coming!

This special edition of the magazine includes a 13-page review of the UK Rail Industry Awards, held at Battersea Evolution in London on 19 February. Thanks to the sponsors, judges, the hundreds of guests who attended and everyone who was nominated or entered the Awards. It truly was a brilliant evening, and feedback has been sensational. You can see the stunning photos by Peter Alvey of Alvey & Towers in the review section, and there are more on our website and Facebook page – facebook.com/railtechnologymagazine.

There will soon be videos from the night too, including the keynote addresses from rail minister Baroness Kramer and DfT Rail Executive managing director of passenger services, Peter Wilkinson, plus interviews with the winners, sponsors and guests. You can also see Andy Ridout’s impassioned appeal on behalf of the Railway Children – which obviously worked, as attendees on the evening donated nearly £5,000 for this important charity. You can find out more about that on page 32. Over the page, you can see my ‘Editor’s Choice’ of some of the best articles and interviews we have for you in this edition, plus a rundown of the main topic focuses and sections.

For breaking news, ensure you’re signed up to our weekly e-newsletter, via www.railtechnologymagazine.com/Newsletter-Signup. Tens of thousands of readers across the industry already get it, to ensure they stay on top of the best industry news, blogs, and comment.

Our next print edition will be our Railtex 2015 special, and already promises to be a bumper edition, featuring an exhaustive showguide to the biggest event in the UK rail calendar. Make sure you get your ticket.

23/01/2018Out with the old...

Despite a few disappointing policy announcements, especially for the electrification aficionados amongst us, 2017 was, like Darren Caplan writes on page 20, a year generally marked by positive news for the rail industry. We polished off the iconic Ordsall Chord (p32), hit some solid milestones on Thameslink (p40), progressed on ambitious rolling stock orders (p16), and finally started moving forward on HS2 (p14) ‒ paving the way for a New Ye... read more >
