Two BIG events

Source: Rail Technology Magazine Oct/Nov 2014

It’s been a busy week for Rail Technology Magazine, not just because of Sir David Higgins’ major new announcements on HS2 (and HS3, come to that), but also because of some of our own major events coming up soon.

First is High Speed 2 The Northern Hub on 6 November, a black tie dinner with some fantastic speakers and what promises to be a great panel discussion. There are full details on pages 92 to 100, but suffice to say that it’s proved popular – there is not a single ticket left. If you have not managed to get one, there will be full coverage of the night in the next edition of the magazine. If you are coming, we look forward to catching up with you at Manchester’s Palace Hotel!

Since the speakers include the top people at HS2 Ltd, the train operators, Transport for Greater Manchester and Network Rail, as well as Manchester Airport, we’re really looking forward to what they have to say about these major rail projects in the region and the work to come.

We’ve also been busily sorting through the piles of entries for the UK Rail Industry Awards, compiling them ready to send off to our independent, cross-industry panel of judges. The panel are a very impressive bunch, and we trust that you’ll know them by name: Terry Morgan; Amanda White; Ian Prosser; Professor William Powrie; Steven Hayter; Martin Brennan; David Clarke; Dave Darnell; Dr Julian Francis; Suzanne O'Keane; Graeme Monteith; Philippa Oldham; David Hawkins; George McInulty; Guy Woodroffe; Iain Aitken Stewart MP; Guy Wilmshurst-Smith; Ben Ackroyd; and Professor Simon Iwnicki.

The 2014 inaugural edition of the Awards was a thoroughly entertaining and inspiring evening – even though personally I spent so much of the night interviewing guests, sponsors, speakers and award winners that I did not get much time to enjoy the dinner itself! The 2015 event will be bigger again, and has had to move to an even larger venue: the amazing Battersea Evolution located inside Battersea Park, central London.

You can find out much more about the Awards and the judges, as well as information about sponsorship and attending on the night, at: www.ukria.com

There’s plenty to enjoy in this edition of RTM before then. We’d be delighted if you want to get in touch with your comments or opinions on any of these stories – you can find contact details for the team down the left hand side of this page.

23/01/2018Out with the old...

Despite a few disappointing policy announcements, especially for the electrification aficionados amongst us, 2017 was, like Darren Caplan writes on page 20, a year generally marked by positive news for the rail industry. We polished off the iconic Ordsall Chord (p32), hit some solid milestones on Thameslink (p40), progressed on ambitious rolling stock orders (p16), and finally started moving forward on HS2 (p14) ‒ paving the way for a New Ye... read more >
