Kenilworth station opening delayed until December 2017

Warwickshire County Council has announced that the new station in Kenilworth will now not be opened until this December due to track and signalling issues, one year after services were meant to begin running.

The station will now open on 10 December 2017 after a revised deadline of August this year was pushed back further, with the opening already postponed from the initial date of December 2016.

The decision was made jointly following discussions between the county council, Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright, the DfT and Network Rail.

“The secretary of state for transport has said that although the station delivery is on track, the main delays to the introduction of the new service are being caused by issues around the signalling project,” said Wright.

“Whilst this is disappointing, it does give a definite opening date after a number of slipped deadlines. I have written to Network Rail to seek assurance that the December 2017 deadline is met.”

Warwickshire County Council confirmed that while the station will be built on time by Graham Construction, Network Rail has been unable to meet the agreed timeframe to deliver the necessary track and signalling works to enable the new train service.

The council leader Cllr Izzi Seccombe has written to Martin Frobisher, Network Rail’s programme director, to seek an unconditional commitment from the infrastructure owner that the station will be open and served by trains by the new deadlines agreed.

The new station, being built on the town’s Priory Road, is being delivered by the county council as a joint enterprise between the council, Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and the DfT, who agreed to provide £5m of the £11.5m cost of the station in December 2013.

The station forms part of a major rail enhancement scheme which aims to encourage economic regeneration between Nuneaton and Leamington Spa and improve connectivity across the West Midlands.

When the station is finally built, it will be served by a new local train service which will run between Leamington Spa and Coventry.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “From December 2017, coinciding with the national timetable change, people in Kenilworth will benefit from a new station and direct access to the railway.

“There has been a minor delay from the original date of August 2017 as we continue to work on the latest safe and state-of-the-art signalling system.”

Simply to say anent this announcement: "Typical!" Can't we get ANYTHING done on time these days? Answer, not on your life!

Whilst the opening of Kenilworth station is welcome, surely there could be better planning and greater urgency in achieving this. And why have trains only running between Leamington and Coventry.

Andrew Gwilt   06/01/2017 at 19:37

I guarantee it could be planning issues but I don't seem why the new railway station in Kenilworth has been delayed. Thought it was getting the go ahead. Cambridge North is due to open in Spring as it didn't have any issues.

As I understand it, there will only be an hourly service anyway because of the limitations of the single line. I can't see why there can't be a through Nuneaton-Coventry-Leamington Spa service. Will the new station have passive provision for a second platform for future dualling?

Andrew Gwilt wrote "Cambridge North is due to open in Spring as it didn't have any issues." Yes, Cambridge North will open on Sunday 21st May 2017 (I went past it earlier today and it's looking very good - I'm expecting to be given a guided tour later this month) but it should have opened in May 2015, then December 2015, then December 2016, largely because of issues with the planning process. Signal on approach to the station from the south was replaced at New Year during a posession - it needed to indicate whether driver is being diverted into the bay platform. We are now on the third and hopefully final - delayed opening date.

What about rebuilding and reopen a new railway station in Milverton which is on the suburbs of Leamington Spa and Warwick which is on the Coventry to Leamington Spa line if Kenilworth does have a new station to be rebuilt and reopened then why not Milverton to have a new station to reopen as it once did have a station before it was closed in 1965. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coventry%E2%80%93Leamington_line https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenilworth_railway_station https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warwick_(Milverton)_railway_station

Surely Kenilworth is getting a loop and two platforms? What happens if Cross-Country is running late, probably not an infrequent occurrence.

Nickw   11/08/2017 at 13:44

We are sorry to announce the late running of the December 2016 service from Kenilworth to Coventry. This train is running approximately 12 months late and should be with you shortly. Passengers who are inconvenienced will be able to walk to their destinations quicker, so we wish you luck in the future.
